What determines whether you make out or not on the first date?

I would like to know why people make out on the first date? Is it the chemistry that occurs between the guy and you? Is it the feeling of being close? Are our hormones the causes of that?
In my case, I did make out with this guy, but not sex and I usually do not make out or kiss on the first date.

In most cases making out on the first date I believe comes from the chemistry btw two people.
